Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) is nocturnal by nature and as a result the corolla only opens in the evening and promptly closes in the morning. It is a beautiful sight to behind the plants as they open their brilliant yellow, four-petaled blossoms after sunset or on dark cloudy or rainy days. The flower has a variety of uses in traditional health. It has been used as a natural response to address headache, nerve pain, and tremors, and has also been used as a "heart tonic" for sensations of dizziness and cardiac insufficiency. The flowers are sweet and have a mild lemony scent - the perfect addition to your favorite tea blend.
A little more about evening primrose - it is a biennial with sturdy taproots. Some plants can grow to be 8ft tall although so far, our tallest have gotten around 5 -6 ft. The plants flower in their second season. They prefer growing in full sun in neutral, well-drained soil that stays moist.
